In episode 3, “Attack of the Five-Foot-Ten Woman,” Carrie learns Big and Natasha recently married after reading about their wedding in The New York Times. In episode 5, “No Ifs, And, or Butts,” Carrie meets furniture designer Aidan Shaw, but the romance almost ends before it begins when Aidan reveals he doesn’t date smokers. Carrie decides Aidan may be worth quitting for, and the two begin dating.
All Seasons
He and Doug were roommates before Doug married Carrie (shown in the episode “Meet By-Product”). He was quietly written out of the show in season three so Romano could work on another sitcom . During that season, he only appeared in one episode, “Paint Misbehavin'”. Richie was known as the ladies’ man among Doug’s friends, even admitting to sleeping with Doug’s sister.
In one flashback episode, “Meet By-Product”, Doug meets Carrie while he is a bouncer at a nightclub that Carrie attends. However, in another episode, “Road Rayge”, Carrie reflects on a song that she says Doug asked her to dance to when they were in junior high school. In the first movie , Big and Carrie are happily in a relationship and house hunting together. They find the perfect apartment and decide to get married. At that point, Carrie decides to come clean and tells Aidan about the affair. They break up right before Charlotte’s wedding to Trey.
In earlier seasons of the show, Doug is, arguably, a caring and sensitive husband who takes care of his wife and father-in-law, Arthur. It is easy to see why Carrie would choose to marry a man like him. Regardless, in later episodes, Doug’s sporadic insensitivity and selfishness would become a constant. Seeing that audiences found it humorous, the show’s writers would change Doug’s personality completely, turning him into a lazy caricature of insensitivity, abuse, selfishness, and spousal neglect. The King of Queens was all about Carrie and Doug Heffernan’s life together.
During the Palmer’s separation, Doug and Carrie go to the movies with Kelly while Deacon takes the kids. While there, Carrie runs into a co-worker who seems interested in Kelly. The two end up going on a date, and when Deacon finds out he is ready to patch things up with her. Doug dreams that he could solve all of his problems if he could assume the roles of vintage sitcom characters.
The complete series has also been released in Germany by Koch Media. An instrumental version was used as the closing theme during season 2, but was replaced in season 3 with a new closing theme composed by Kurt Farquhar. In the 2001 episode “Inner Tube”, the show pays homage to The Honeymooners as a distraught Doug dreams that he is Ralph Kramden, Carrie is Alice Kramden, and Deacon is Ed Norton. The sequence was filmed in black and white, and the audio quality matches a 1950s style.
